Young Author Writing Projects Guidelines
PURPOSE: To support our teachers in their efforts to improve students' writing, reading, listening, and sharing skills, and to celebrate the students' accomplishments.
This year the Young Authors writing project is mandatory for grades 1-8. This administrative decision, which is evisioned to improves writing skills for all students, provides a rewarding opportunity for our studnet body to showcase their creative writing and artistic talents.
· Manuscript front cover must include ORIGINAL artwork, title of story, and author’s name.
· The entry tag on the outside back cover must include the homeroom teacher’s name, student’s grade level and category (story or poetry).
· Only ORIGINAL illustrations may be used in story. (No clipart, PHOTOGRAPHS, ETC.)
· Interest to other readers is important for your product.
· Creativity of student needs to be evident.
· Poems/story must be in student’s own language (may be typed or handwritten by an adult).
· Short stories must include story elements: setting, characters, problem, and resolution. In other words, the story’s plot must include the character/s facing a problem and how it is solved.
· Story may be proofread by an adult for capitalization, punctuation, spelling and other grammatical errors.
· Last page in book needs to be About the Author and may include a picture. Teachers may save a school file picture for students to use on the About the Author page.
· The About the Author page needs to give information about the author (age, grade, interests, hobbies). The author may also want to include what or who inspired him/her to create their work.
· Book of poetry can be submitted (minimum of 8-10 poems). Each poem must include an ORIGINAL illustration with explicit detail. Each poem MUST have a title.
· For best results on the Power Point Presentation at the YA Celebration, please have students use black medium point markers to outline pictures, titles, and their name on the front cover.
· Deadline is Friday, December 10, 2010 (manuscript or poetry should be submitted to homeroom teacher). Note: Your teacher may have an earlier deadline.
· Illinois Statewide Young Author Conference is Saturday, May 21, 2011 in Bloomington.
· The ribbon winners will have the opportunity to go on a Book Tour to CHS to share their winning entry.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
· All entries must have the entry tag (provided by YA committee) on the outside back cover.
· There will be two categories again this year: Story and Poetry.
· At each grade level three ribbons will be awarded in the Story category and three in the Poetry category.
· One student from District 12 will represent us at the 37th Annual Illinois Statewide Young Author Conference.
· The YA Celebration will be held on Thursday April 28, 2011.
